REPORT CARD INFORMATION
Tremendous amounts of energy and thought go into preparing and writing report cards. Teachers spend a great deal of time assessing and reporting how each child is progressing along their learning journey.
Assessment consists of a variety of conversation, observation, process and product-based tasks, over time. These multiple forms of assessment determine the extent and level to which learner outcomes from the curriculum have been demonstrated by your child.
CBE began implementing the new Alberta Education Curriculum:
- Fall 2022 start:
- Mathematics (K-3)
- English Language Arts and Literature (K-3)
- Physical Education and Wellness (K-6)
- Fall 2023 start:
- Mathematics (4-6)
- English Language Arts and Literature (4-6)
- French Language Arts and Literature (K-3)
- Science (K-3)
In the new curriculum, some things students learn may be new or may have previously been taught in higher grades. Students could be missing foundational pieces from previous grades, and their report card indicators might not be as high as before. This is expected when there is a new curriculum. It might take more than one school year to build these foundational skills. Even though each grade has its own curriculum, many ideas come up again each year, helping students to build on what they already know and do well.
Rubrics are clearly outlined sets of criteria that explain what a learner should know and be able to do. Throughout a learning cycle, a teacher will use a variety of assessments (rubrics, tests, performance-based tasks, observations, feedback, conversations, quizzes, etc.) At the end of the cycle, students and teachers can assess progress in reference to the criteria, and decide on next steps in learning. A teacher then uses the most recent evidence of achievement to determine an indicator mark for the report card.
Report card comments will look a bit different this year. Comments have been streamlined to clearly convey what a student has learned, where growth is needed and what supports are in place to foster this growth with regard to the curricular, grade level outcomes and to reflect the new curriculum that is in place.
Should you have any questions at all, please connect with your child’s teacher for clarifications.
ICE BLOCKS REQUESTED
We will be building an ice castle again this year during our Semaine de la Francophonie. Please start freezing ice in 2-liter containers. Coloured blocks look the best. Choose whatever food colouring you have in your pantry for the ice blocks. We have no storage for ice blocks here at school, so please do keep them at home until further notice. Merci!
Tips:
- Spray the inside of the container with spray oil.
- Make a few – they may not all work.
- 2 Litre carton containers are the best.
CONTINOUS REGISTRATION
Please be aware that existing are automatically registered for the -25 school year. for grade 4 students transitioning to their designated next school, David Thompson, to continue in the Early French Immersion program.
Registrations are considered “continuous” meaning no actions are required on the part of families. If your child is NOT attending Sam Livingston School or David Thompson School next year, please contact the office as soon as possible.
