Supporting your kids through to the end of the year...

The end of the school year really is a bittersweet time for kids. They’re excited for the freedom and fun of summer, but at the same time, they can feel sadness or anxiety about leaving the familiar environment and people they’ve grown close to. Since young children often don’t have the words to express these feelings fully, their emotions show up through their actions—sometimes through clinginess, irritability, or withdrawal.

Helping children develop the ability to sit with and tolerate discomfort is such a crucial skill. It teaches emotional resilience and self-regulation, which are foundational for healthy emotional development. When adults support kids in recognizing and managing their feelings—without immediately fixing or dismissing them—children gradually learn to navigate complex emotions on their own.

Are you thinking about ways to support kids through this transition, or strategies to help them with emotional regulation?  Read on...

How to help...

  • Ensure a good night’s rest – young kids need 9-12 hours of sleep
  • Proper nutrition
  • Movement – try to get outside and move for fun (go to the park, play in the backyard, go for a bike ride)
  • Hugs – give more and try to hold one a day for at least 20 seconds
  • As your child asks questions or makes comments about the end of the year try to engage in the following ways:
  • Be curious and genuinely interested in what they are saying.
  • Listen actively and avoid interrupting or judging.
  • Create a safe and comfortable space for sharing.
  • Focus on the child's emotional needs.
  • Remember that it's okay to not have all the answers.
